Liberia Reads!
Student outcomes for reading fluency and comprehension are the strongest in Liberia, exceeding international benchmarks.
Liberia Reads to Learn!
Liberia Reads to Learn (LRL) reading kits are multileveled, differentiated reading labs developed by educators both in and out of Liberia specifically for use in Liberian intermediate classrooms with students reading and comprehending on a wide range of levels. Each kit contains 75 topics written and calibrated for readability across six reading levels ranging from early primary level to late intermediate level for a total of 450 stand-alone passages (180-450 words each). The topics come from the life sciences, the earth and physical sciences, Liberian social studies, world social studies, and literature. Each topic in the LRL kits is aligned with the Liberian Ministry of Education's (MOE) national curricular standards. The kits are designed for each student in a classroom to independently read and answer questions on passages 2 - 3 times weekly at his or her own reading level. Students are taught an integrated system of comprehension strategies to deepen their understanding of the passages they read.
The following are sample LRL passages. The first is from the easiest level (Crocodile) and the second is from the most difficult level (Parrot).
Principals as Coaches
In an effort to improve the monitoring and accountability needed within the ALE network, Principals as Coaches was started as an initiative that assigns selected principals to visit schools and observe classrooms in ALE schools other than their own. After the school visits, Principal/Coaches give their feedback to the teachers, school's principal and the ALE. Coach/Principals not only have a deep knowledge of the program's pedagogy and methodology, but carry with them digital readers that are uploaded with dozens of video clips of ALE master teachers demonstrating exemplary lessons of activities taught in the LR training session that can be used with struggling teachers.
Teaching Early Grade Reading Endorsement (TEGRE)
TEGRE is a partnership between the Liberian Ministry of Education (MOE) and the LR Association of Literacy Educators (ALE). It is a program of in-service training for any early grade teacher or school administrator focused on the teaching of reading skills. TEGRE is comprised of three modules, each lasting 4 weeks: Phonological Awareness & Phonics; Fluency & Accuracy; and Comprehension & Vocabulary. The successful completion of this training, occurring on Saturdays and conducted by certified ALE trainers, is recognized by the MOE in the form of an official endorsement in teaching early grade reading.
